Basic Studio — Home art class

When I was in college I took a great art class called Basic Studio. The idea was to introduce us to a variety of methods and materials like photography, life drawing, sculpture, collage, painting. What was particularly cool about it was that a lot of these project were connected and derived from one another which led to unexpected themes showing up in your work.

The first thing we did (if I remember correctly in my college haze) was go around campus taking photos of naturally occurring letters. This was great for two reasons — it forced me to go outside and it forced me to pay attention. After printing our photos, we cut them up and created a collage of anything we wanted. This was where my theme started showing up — corn on the cob. Then we made a painting of a section of the collage. And so on.

I thought it would be fun to try this extended art project with my seven and nine year old kids, so on Sunday we took our cameras (they got one from their grandparents for x-mas) and headed outside to see what letters (and numbers) we could find.

Click the link below to see more examples and if you can find the letters (some are upside down, one is darn near impossible), then check back later to see our progress with the collages.

By the way, in the picture above my daughter is making a letter that appears in several of the other photographs.

i used to teach design at uni and I got my students to make an alphabet book using similar methods. They then had to compile it onto the computer and design it around their own format.
