Ok, ok, I know, the title sucks
Amazon just released their new e-book reader, Kindle, and man is it ugly. I thought it was a joke at first or perhaps an early not-ready-for-primetime prototype, but no, this is the one on the market.
To be fair, I haven’t handled one in person but my first reaction was it reminds me of an old U.S. Robotics modem that someone put on my desk as a joke. I’ve put a collage together of what I think was Amazon’s inspiration board for the Kindle:
And as a business proposition it leaves a lot to be desired. Four hundred bucks for the privilege of downloading Amazon’s DRM books for ten dollars a pop. Who’s going to do that except for a billionaire like Bezos? They should be giving them away or at least put ten free books on them and sell them for $50.
Just my opinion.

OMG. I feel so old. I actually recognize that old technology and even remember using most of it.
To be fair, the Kindle does look better as featured on Amazon (using the link you provided). I heard a recent interview with Bezos on NPR’s All Things Considered. At least HE sounds excited about it.
